Find a GroupWhy We Exist
Shiloh is a community of faith rooted in the African American worship tradition, serving hundreds of families in the Greater Trenton community and around the world.
Not a building. Not a program. A family of believers — formed, fed, and sent out to bring transformation to every life we touch.
Equipping is the work. The loving is the fruit. From Sunday morning worship to Monday morning Christian education, every program serves one end.
Our Core Values
Sound and in-depth Christian education for all persons — every age, every season of faith.
Time, talent, spiritual gifts, and treasures — used effectively to advance the Kingdom of God.
A warm, welcoming, and inclusive environment that embraces, encourages and supports all who enter our doors.
Engaging in substantive ways to display care, concern and responsibility for the community and the world.
Nurturing members as instruments to bring people to Christ — equipping the saints for the work of ministry.
Rooted in the rich heritage of Black church worship — sound preaching, soulful music, generational continuity.
Our Story
Shiloh's footprint runs through Trenton history — from the first president of the local NAACP branch to the first Black speaker of the NJ State Assembly. The street out front, "Rev. S. Howard Woodson, Jr. Way," is named for a pastor who served Shiloh for 53 years.
Rev. Dr. White brings visionary leadership to Shiloh. He goes on to make history as the first president of the Trenton NAACP Branch and is appointed to a special commission to study African American progress 50 years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
Land is purchased on Belvidere and Calhoun Streets. Construction begins in 1917 — the new church building is dedicated for service in the spring of 1918.
Rev. Dr. Woodson serves Shiloh as Pastor for 53 years. The congregation grows from 218 members to over 1,000. In 1972, the church completes a $1.2 million new edifice — one of the largest and most expensive capital projects of any Black church in New Jersey at the time.
For most of his 53-year pastoral tenure, Rev. Woodson served simultaneously as senior pastor and elected official. He becomes the first Black Speaker of the NJ State Legislature — the first Black person to serve in such capacity in the United States. The street outside Shiloh is later renamed in his honor.
Pastor Armstrong carries forward more than a century of faithful witness — preaching the Word, equipping the saints, and continuing the tradition of "Reaching Up, Reaching In, and Reaching Out" to Trenton and beyond.
